  • Wanda brings Sophie to Hotel Polski in the last moment. David was already going crazy. At last the three of them climb aboard the crowded truck which will take them to the station. Sophie doesn't seem to know where she is, she's confused. She doesn't say much or eat anything. They are crowded into the third-class carriages, eight per compartment. David introduces his family to the other occupants and learns that Mrs Gutkowska and her 12-year-old daughter and Mrs. Halpern with her two daughters are travelling to Haifa to join their families.
Two days go by when David realises that something is wrong. They are no longer on the main line and the sun is setting beside them not in front of the train as it should. He starts to panic. Around midnight the train stops.
