Street: Twarda City: From Warsaw

The author collected all his notes written between 1939 and 1941 and created a diary in Polish and English ('Diary') accompanied by short articles. The diaries are collections of notes describing the siege of Warsaw, the beginning of the occupation (e.g. notes about forced labour) and the life in the Warsaw ghetto. The 'Diary' is an abbreviated version of the original diary in English. In the diary there are reflections on the origin of Poland's downfall (criticism of pre-war Polish policies) by an eye-witness. The diary includes: a summary of what Heinrich Heine' said bout the political situation of the Germans, Poles and Jews, recollections of persecutions of the Jews in various epochs, reflections on Ludendorff (the commander of the German army) and his attitude towards the Jews and Poland; reflections on dictatorship and dictators and the demographic situation of France in 1939 in the light of Jean Giraudoux's book 'Pleins Pouvoirs.'
