Aged 18. He was deported from Belgium to Auschwitz Birkenau with his family two years earlier. His father, mother and older brother died in Auschwitz Birkenau (the mother in a gas chamber, the brother was beaten to death and the father committed suicide). Daniel was brought to Warsaw, where he worked as a ghetto cleaner. The outbreak of the Warsaw uprising freed him. From September 1944 to January 1945 he hid in a bunker under the cellars of the house at Franciszkanska Street No. 8. After the war he returned to Belgium where he found his older sister.
