  • A women, taken to a hospital to deliver her baby, returns with bad news. She has spoken to a man who escaped from the train that left for Dresden. They were heading east not west so he paid a guard to tell him the truth. They were going to Auschwitz. All hope for any exchange dies with her words.
As the spring gives way to summer, typhus breaks out. Hundreds of bodies are taken to the crematoria that now burn daily.
The end of summer brings an epidemic of diarrhoea. Many prisoners are lacking the strength to walk to the toilets. The stench makes sleep difficult.
The food portions become smaller and smaller. People are always hungry. One morning David sees a man sitting naked in the dirt with a cardboard sign aroung his neck on which is written - " I ate a human liver". People have turned into cannibals. No one can be trusted.
In January parcels from the Red Cross arrive - chocolates, sugar cubes and bread. Without those packages many people would have never made it to see the spring.
