The Latoszewskis owed Berland's father-in-law a big sum of money. Before the war the father-in-law helped them to buy a shop and partially stocked it up with goods. The shop prospered and the Latoszewskis got rich. Maria Berland had remembered about the debt and went to see them in September 1943. They gave her a merciful welcome but they claimed that the debt had been paid off. They only gave her an old quilt.
