  • Before the war he lived in Wloclawek. He traded in cereals, he was an exporter and a member of National Chamber of Commerce. A renowned activist of Yivo - the financial and organisational pillar of the institute. He was a patron of Jewish book and theater. In 1939 after the German encroachment, as a refugee he found himself with his family in Warsaw. In the ghetto as the specialist in economy he was on one of the most important posts in the hierarchy of the ghetto, worked in the Department of Supply [of the Judenrat] in the Supply Office. He tried to supply writers, artists, researchers, youth and children and their teachers with necessary for survival products. Winter liaised between Judenrat (at Grzybowska Street) and the Jewish Self-Help (in Tlomackie Street No. 5). He was also involved in creating Ringelblum's archive, being one of its most important pillars. During the First Action he lost his wife and the younger son. Between the First and the Second Action he worked in the Supply Section in Franciszkanska Street No. 30. Already at that time he was the member of the Financial Committee of the fighting organization and was collecting money for purchase of weapon. He died in the first days of May 1943 during the uprising in the ghetto. After throwing a bomb into the bunker opposite Franciszkansa Street No. 30 people hiding there were taken out. Among them there was Winter; he was shot on the square at the Judenrat building in Zamenhofa Street No. 19. Probably his children a daughter and a son were also killed with him.
