  • Matka i Halinka zaczynają głodować. Praca nauczycielki skończyła się wraz z wybuchem wojny - obie starają się znaleźć źródło dochodu. Chodzą po ulicach i sprzedają mydło, sardynki, cukierki, papierosy. Zarobki są nikłe, nie mogą kupić węgla na zimę. W nieogrzewanym mieszkaniu nabawiają się odmrożeń. Mimo to są szczęśliwe - wielu warszawiaków wcale nie ma dachu nad głową.
