    Fran Weiss was born Fryma Lea Deitelzweig on October 27, 1944 in Otwock, Poland in an underground bunker on the property of Mary Lewandowski (or Laskowski). Fran's parents, Zlota and Pesach Deitelzweig (later Zelda and Paul Deitell) had been married in 1939 shortly after a bomb had destroyed Zlota's family home, killing her parents, several of her sisters, and two nephews.
    Their first child, Eta Perl (later Ellen), was born in the Warsaw Ghetto in 1941. Eta was smuggled out of the ghetto into the hands of Mary who had a Christian birth certificate forged for the child. By the end of 1941, Mary had a bunker prepared where she hid Zlota until 1945. Mary also managed to smuggle Pesach out in February 1943.
