W październiku 1939 r. został aresztowany i osadzony na Pawiaku, zwolniony w sierpniu 1940 r. Pomógł mu przedwojenny znajomy Antoni Schumanna, który opłacał adwokatów i Niemców. Po zwolnieniu z Pawiaka dał Norbertowi pieniądze i ubranie. Odwiedzał jego rodzinę w getcie, przynosił żywność i jedzenie. Dzięki swoim znajomościom z Niemcami wyratował z wagonów kolejowych rodzinę Hochmana. Pomagał Norbertowi Hochmanowi finansowo również gdy ten ukrywał się w lasach po aryjskiej stronie.
