Brought up by his widow mother. She does not have the typical Semitic appearance. In wartime Warsaw she makes a living taking children out for walks. In the ghetto both she and the mother live from a telephone which happens to work and besides is 'official', thus without bills.

When the war begins, she is 14. Before the war she was small, fat girl. When the Germans liquidate the ghetto she is 18. On p. 104 Halina mentions her death father for the first time; he was a 'great propagator of Jewish state'.
